Shoe In

How do you dress for success? Do you dress for the job you want or the job you have? Are your shoes made for walking or climbing the ladder of success? Well, you know upward mobility is always on the mind of an avid blogger. This week we take the plunge into Spring and Summer trends, but not in the way of dressing down but more buttoning up. Does that mean we have work on the mind? Maybe. You'll just have to see for yourself.

3 Halloween Costumes From Your Closet- 90's Edition

Last year, I knew exactly what I wanted to be for Halloween this year, and I've pretty much stuck to the thought of it, but it looks like I won't be celebrating this year. With the 90's making their (ugh) "comeback", I thought I'd present you with three super easy costumes, which can come straight out of your (or your boyfriends) own closet.

There are three things that I will always remember about the 90's. Peggy Bundy, "Mi Vida Loca" and Niki Taylor on the cover of Sassy! I especially loved that month's magazine and endlessly flipping through it. With that said, I chose to base these costumes off of those memories.

Three iconic things that will always stick out to me about the 90's, aside from aliens being a central motif. What do you remember about the 90's? If you give these a try I'd definitely like to see how you pulled it all together!

Cherry Lips- My Favorite Revlon Shades

#108 Moment On The Lips

Wearing lipstick is something that can make a woman feel confident and sexy. Buying the high-end brands for esteem purposes is well and good when you can afford it, but when you're in student mode, there's nothing wrong with drugstore products.

The Lipstick Effect

Last semester I learned about a little concept called, The Lipstick Effect, which essentially goes something like this: In hard economic times, women will forego buying large luxury items such as coats, purses and shoes from a particular designer/label, and instead opt for smaller items from said designer/label. Lipstick, nail polish, perfume, etc. They can still buy into the brand that they love, gain the esteem from buying said item, and not dig too much of a hole in their pocketbooks.

For some people, $10 for lipstick is decent, but $30 or $40 for one may seem a little crazy.  So here's a list of the four drugstore lipsticks that I wear. You must remember that each shade suits me and my complexion. The thing about lipstick is, you just have to keep getting back on the horse until you find the one that works for you.

750 Kiss Me Coral: I was looking for an orange/red shade last summer. For me it's something fun and flirty.

525 Wine with Everything: A burgendy shade to tone down the day looks.

740 Certainly Red: The classic red that every girl looks for. It's great for bringing that extra 'oomph' to night looks.

683 Demure: In my opinion, a girl needs two lipsticks in her repertoire. A great classic red, and an even better nude. For my complexion, this color works best.

3 Ways to Wear A Scarf At The Beach

3 Ways To Wear A Scarf At The Beach-Title

I know, I know. You're like, "What?! Why would I want to do that?" but hear me out. Sometimes you get self-concious about your body. You want to go to the beach, but you also want to cover yourself up, but maybe you don't have a sarong. Maybe you hate putting a T-shirt over or shorts on, which makes you feel even crappier. Well here comes the scarf.

The scarf I used is a thin, airy, CK scarf picked up at Ross and measures a little over 3x3 square. Today, I'm showing you three easy ways to cover up those parts that you're self-concious about. The top-half, the bottom-half, and full-body.

3 Ways To Wear A Scarf At The Beach- Top Half
Top Half:

Take your Scarf and bring together the opposite ends creating a triangle. Bring it to your chest, and tie a knot in the back. You can put shorts on with this or leave as is.

3 Ways to Wear A Scarf At The Beach- Bottom Half
Bottom Half:

Just like the step above, bring together two ends of the opposite sides of the scarf creating a triangle. Wrap around your waist to one side, tie the ends together on the other side and let the loose ends hang. You can also put a T-shirt on over this if you're getting a little too exposed to the sun.

3 Ways To Wear A Scarf At The Beach- Full Body
Full Body:

Opening up the entire scarf, grab two ends of the same side. Bring it around your back so that the ends of the scarf are in front of you. Tie and a knot and you're done!

Now I know I mentioned not having to wear a frumpy T-shirt or shorts at the top but then mentioned them anyway. You can still wear a shirt or shirts but the scarf gives you an option of spicing your beach outfit up a bit. The beach is the perfect place to make yourself feel sexy.

Note: Also, I don't want to hear comments about my body. I love my body. I love that it supports me through the treacherous Beachbody and Spartan workouts that I've recently been putting it through, and although it's not perfect, it's the only one I have. Also, this is an entry for IFB project #100

This California Girls' Summer Style

Summer Style 2013

IFB always has a weekly project that I try to keep up with, depending on whether I like the post idea or not. Last weeks post was about summer style so I thought I'd show you mine.

I try to keep it simple every year and usually only change up my accessories. My staples are lots and lots of shorts. They're actually my favorite thing to wear. A black bikini top (sometimes I don't like to be bothered with a bra), tank tops, and usually some sort of ostentatious 'Mercuh item whether it be a pair of shorts, a tank top, a scarf, sunglasses, or a tote bag.

Usually during summer I wear sandals but recently I like wearing my white mid-top Chuck Taylors and I think I'll continue to do so as the season progresses. I've managed to keep them clean for a long time so they still look super white and I like that crispness. Hopefully, I can maintain that during the summer, but I can't make any promises. I've also been looking for the perfect tortoise shell sunglasses and I think this pair from Betsy Johnson just might be the ones.

I want to go thrifting more often this summer a goal is to create a pair of 501 cutoffs that fit me perfectly. Is that too much to ask for? I hope I can do it.

So what's your summer style?

Flipper, Willy, there's a Difference?

Free Willy Necklace

There are few movies I remember watching in theaters when I was a child. The Little Mermaid and Jurassic Park to name a few, but there was one in particular that I remember being obsessed with. Free Willy. I have no idea why either. That following summer I went to Mexico to visit my grandparents as usual. I saw this necklace at the airport in Mazatlan and had to have it, so my dad bought it for me. I loved it! I wore it every day. I even took my school picture with it on. I deemed it my 'Free Willy necklace'. My dad would often ask me later on if I remembered how I got my 'Free Willy' necklace. I'd smile and say, "Yeah".

It wasn't until last month that I was cleaning out my closet and found an old Forever 21 bag with random things inside that I found that necklace again. I gasped and smiled when I realized what it was. One, because after all these years, I still deem it worthy of remaining in my collection. Two, because it wasn't a whale but a dolphin after all, and three, because it brought back all those feelings that I had when I originally saw it.

It's not a fancy necklace, nor was it expensive with it's black cord. There are no precious jewels hanging from it or set on it, but it's still precious to me.

OMG I'm Dying- Oscar's Best Dressed for 2013

Oscars Best Dressed 2013
Truthfully, I'm not one for awards shows simply because I don't care for painfully awkward small talk, and really, that's what the whole red carpet is all about, but I endured it today and I'm glad I did. There were some ladies who completely bombed, sorry Anne Hathaway, and some who had  fairly nice dresses but the ladies above had me gawking.

I loved Amy Adams' more formal Oscar dress, and my favorite on the edgier side, had to be Halle Berry's Versace. STUNNING. Charlize Theron was absolutely lithe in her Dior piece, and Naomi Watt's one shouldered Armani Prive dress had me shaking my head and thinking, "Why is she with Liev Shrieber?".

But I digress, these were the ladies who I think absolutely nailed their outfits for this years Academy Awards, right on the head.

Great Job ladies!

SoCal Winter Accessories

There's no denying that Southern Californians are wusses when it comes to the weather. We know we are. You don't need much to be able to bear a Southern California winter. A hoodie, a scarf, and maaaybe, some gloves. Maybe. That's really about it. Of course there are always copious pairs of Uggs to be seen, and although honestly I sometimes wish I subscribed to the Uggs mindset, I can't bring myself to wear them. This winter has proven to be chillier than normal and a pair of Uggs doesn't sound so bad right now. Maybe I can get away with hiding them in the dark corners of my closet, and hope that no one goes looking for something back there. Anyway, it's been around 40°s at night, chilly.

I actually had to buy a coat.

A COAT, PEOPLE!!!

So here's all it really takes to survive our 40-60° winters, which I understand is probably a lot warmer than what some of you other folks get.

SoCal Winter Accessories-IFB-Project-78

The coat is by Me Jane, picked up at Ross. The scarf was a handmade Christmas gift from 2012. The gloves are Pugsgear, picked up at 7-Eleven. Yes, you read that right. They actually keep my hands really warm. My little trick for warm feet during winter is hiking socks. Their purpose is to keep you warm anyway, so I tend to wear these A LOT. As long as my feet are warm, I really don't need to worry about the rest, and an umbrella. Our rainy season is usually the middle to end of January, until about the end of February, but this year, it's been raining about once a week since Thanksgiving, probably? Oh, and don't forget about your lips. They need a good chapstick! I'm still using my Chapstick LipSHIELD 365 and so far, my lips aren't looking haggard.

Goals For 2013

Goals-for-2013

Unlike last year where I made a bunch of goals, most of which I don't even remember now, I only have two goals for 2013.
2012 was the year that I let things happen to me. Where I merely existed and didn't live, and that's something that's been weighing on me heavily for the last month or so. I can't wait for the year to be over. To get a fresh start.
2013 is the year I decided I'm going to start living. It is the year where I spend more money on experiences rather than on things. I haven't quite decided what experiences I want to have this year, but that's the point. I want to take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves to me, when they present themselves, as well as a few planned ones as well, of course.
I've made a big decision for 2013 that I have yet to announce on the blog, but most family and friends know about it already. It's a pretty structured and rigid commitment that I keep second-guessing myself on, but it's one that I know I have to go through with if I really want to change the person I am, and learn to become the person I want to be. My best friend is convinced that it's something that I will thoroughly enjoy and most likely excel in. I just have to take care of a few preliminary details before I go through with it.
The second goal that I have for 2013 is to learn how to manage my stress/anxiety/depression better. I'm the type of person who will stress themselves out to the point of feeling nauseous and feeling the need to vomit. And usually it's over something that I have no control over. But that's the point, I don't have control over it and that's why I get stressed/anxious.  I need to learn to not let other peoples' words or actions destroy my inner peace. I need to control my depression because honestly, for the last 3 weeks, I haven't wanted to do anything but lay in bed under the blankets and watch hours upon hours of Netflix, and for the most part, that's exactly what I've done. Shirking interaction with friends. I even got caught at work crying by a co-worker who seemed fairly concerned at the fact that I was crying. He should have never been able to do that.
There's also a third, unofficial goal that I have for the blog and that's to be more open and personal about things. I know I don't post very much personal stuff on here but I'm going to try that for a bit. Let's see how that goes.
So those are the two things that I'm focusing on this year. Nice and simple.
What are your goals for the new year?
